Azmeh: A Palestinian App That Helps Navigate Military Checkpoints
In a region where daily life is shaped by restrictions and delays, a group of Palestinian volunteers has launched a mobile app called “Azmeh” (Arabic for “traffic jam”), aiming to ease the burden of movement for thousands of drivers and commuters in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
Born from Frustration, Built with Purpose
Launched in June 2023, Azmeh is a grassroots initiative that allows users to share real-time information about traffic congestion and checkpoint closures. Through community-powered updates, the app alerts users to delays and suggests alternative routes—saving hours of waiting at Israeli military checkpoints that divide Palestinian cities and restrict movement.
Fast Adoption, Widespread Use
Within its first week, Azmeh was downloaded over 22,000 times. Today, more than 25,000 Palestinians rely on it daily to plan their routes, especially in the greater Jerusalem area. According to Montaser Dkeidek, Director of the Burj Al-Luqluq Center in Jerusalem, the app has become a vital tool for drivers across the West Bank.
By the People, For the People
What sets Azmeh apart is its purely civic spirit. Developed by Palestinians for Palestinians, it’s driven by collective participation. Users voluntarily report on traffic, closures, or delays—offering a form of crowdsourced relief in a place where mobility is often out of one’s control.
A Daily Struggle, A Glimpse of Hope
Since 1967, Israeli military checkpoints have disrupted daily life for Palestinians—delaying commutes, emergency travel, and even school attendance. For many, long hours stuck in traffic near barriers have become a painful routine, especially during periods of heightened tension.
Jerusalem resident Rajai Suleiman says he never leaves home without checking Azmeh first. “It’s become part of my daily survival toolkit,” he notes. Talal Shweiki adds, “This gridlock is our reality now. We’ve learned to live around it.” Yet for others like Ubada Salaymeh, the app brings a bit of relief: “It helps a lot—it gives me a chance to avoid the worst of it.”
